The Montreal Canadiens are one step closer to signing goaltender Sam Montembeault.
The pending unrestricted free agent is on an expiring two-year deal that brought him to Montreal from the Florida Panthers and has seen 46 starts for the Canadiens.
"I do think Montreal is taking a real run at getting Samuel Montembeault signed," Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on the Saturday Headlines segment of Hockey Night in Canada. "He's one of the best this year at goals saved above expected, according to Money Puck.
I think they are trying to close something with him."
In six games this season, Montembeault has posted a 3.06 goals against average with a 0.902 save percentage.
The 27-year-old was claimed by the Canadiens in October of 2021 after being placed on waivers by the Florida Panthers. After starting goaltender Jake Allen was injured, Montembeault took over starting duties for an extended period that season and put on a performance that earned him that two-year extension.
The native of Becancour, Que., was selected 77th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2015 NHL Draft.
