Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Newhook has begun skating again after suffering an ankle injury at the end of November.
The 22-year-old sustained the injury in the Canadiens' 5-1 loss to the Florida Panthers back on Nov. 30. Two days later, it was officially announced as a high ankle sprain with a recovery timeline of 10 to 12 weeks.
Suited up in regular gear on Friday morning, Newhook took to the ice ahead of the Canadiens' practice, taking shots on net. He also skated for 25 minutes on Thursday, donning a team tracksuit.
Over the course of his absence, Newhook has already missed 25 games with Montreal. In the 23 he played prior to his injury, the St. Johns, N.L. native recorded seven goals and six assists.
This is Newhook's first season with Montreal after he was acquired in the off-season in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche, in exchange for a first- and second-round pick and a prospect.
Selected by the Avalanche as the 16th-overall pick in the 2019 draft, Newhook tallied 66 points (27 goals and 39 assists) in 159 games with the franchise.
