The Montreal Canadiens have placed defenceman Arber Xhekaj on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, the team announced Saturday.
The 22-year-old suffered the injury on Sunday against the Edmonton Oilers when he fought Oilers defenceman Vincent Desharnais in the second period. He did not return to the game.
Xhekaj will have a meeting with a specialist in the next few days after which an update on his status will be shared. He has five goals and eight assists in 51 games for the Canadiens this season.
In a corresponding move, the Canadiens recalled defenceman Corey Schueneman from Laval Rocket.
Schueneman has played 43 games for Laval this season, scoring five goals and adding 13 assists. The 27-year-old defenceman has not played for the Canadiens this season, but played in 24 games last year where he picked up two goals and four assists.
The Canadiens also announced that forward Kirby Dach will miss his second-straight contest with a non-COVID related sickness.
You can watch the Canadiens take on the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday night on Hockey Night in Canada live on Sportsnet and SN NOW at 7:00 p.m. ET/ 4:00 p.m. PT.
