The Montreal Canadiens have promoted long-time team executive John Sedgwick to assistant general manager.
Sedgwick initially joined the Canadiens in 2013 as director of legal affairs. He was promoted to vice president of hockey operations and legal affairs in 2017. He also serves as the principal governor for the AHL’s Laval Rocket and was involved with the establishment of the ECHL’s Trois-Rivieres Lions.
In a statement, the Canadiens say Sedgwick’s responsibilities “include player contract negotiation and salary arbitration, daily management and strategic planning of the salary cap, as well as overseeing all matters related to the NHL-NHLPA collective bargaining agreement.”
The Canadiens have drastically reshaped their off-ice roles in recent months, beginning with the firing of general manager Marc Bergevin and hiring of president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton in November. In January, player agent Kent Hughes was named general manager, which was followed by the additions of Martin St. Louis (head coach), Vincent Lecavalier (special advisor of hockey operations) and Nick Bobrov (co-director of amateur scouting) earlier this month.
The Canadiens have a three-game win streak for the first time this season and host the Buffalo Sabres Wednesday night. You can watch the game on Sportsnet East, Sportsnet ONE and SN NOW, beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT.
