The Montreal Canadiens snapped their "Reverse Retro curse" with a gutsy comeback win over the New York Islanders on Saturday. Still, head coach Martin St. Louis is ready to sink the baby blue sweaters to the bottom of the St. Lawrence River.
"I think the hockey gods, you know this is a historical franchise, you probably have some guys who wore those jerseys 50 years ago (when they) were red and white, they're looking down (saying) 'What are you guys doing?'" St. Louis said after the 4-3 shootout win. "So, we probably get what we deserve with the blue jersey based on how historical this franchise is. So, we'll see. I don't know what next year brings but I hope it's not those jerseys."
Saturday's win was the Canadiens' first while wearing the blue sweaters, improving their putrid record in them to 1-6-1. That included multi-goal losses to the Devils (5-1), Kings (4-2), Ducks (5-2), Kraken (4-0), Panthers (6-2) and Senators (5-0), as well as a 4-3 overtime loss to the Red Wings.
Although the playoffs are not in the cards for the Canadiens this season, they at least won't have to fight any supernatural forces the rest of the way: Saturday's win was their last scheduled game in the blue uniforms. And you can bet there won't be any children's books written about them, now that they're gone.
