Vancouver Canucks winger Brock Boeser may have to wait to be dealt until San Jose Sharks star forward Timo Meier is traded, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
"The big question here is, does he have to wait until Timo Meier is dealt, or does a team say 'we're out on Meier, we'll look at Boeser instead?'" Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts segment of Hockey Night in Canada.
Boeser's name has been floated as a potential trade candidate since last season and resumed in December, as Friedman reported that the Canucks granted Boeser's agent permission to speak with other teams.
The 25-year-old signed a three-year, $19.95 million contract extension with the Canucks in the off-season, but he has failed to produce. Former Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau listed him as a healthy scratch against the Arizona Coyotes on Dec. 3, but a last-minute injury saw him slotted back into the lineup.
Boeser was drafted 23rd overall by the Canucks in the 2015 NHL Draft and has since scored 131 goals and 291 points in 369 games.
Friedman also reported that trade talks have heated up around defenceman and pending UFA Luke Schenn.
Schenn, 33, revitalized his career with the Canucks and now, on an expiring contract, has turned himself into a valuable trading chip for the struggling Vancouver team.
"The way he plays, teams want to move this to the forefront," Friedman reported on Hockey Night in Canada. "I think Calgary and Boston are among the teams that have looked at it, we'll see where this goes."
The veteran blue liner has scored three goals and 18 points in his 52 games, spending a large portion of the season playing on the top pair with Quinn Hughes.
