The Vancouver Canucks are adding to their blue line on Day 1 of the 2023 signing season. As reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the club is adding defenceman Carson Soucy to the mix on a three-year deal worth $3.25 million annually.
The signing doesn't come as a huge surprise — the Canucks were reported to be very interested in landing the big blue liner, and now complete the deal. Soucy, 28, was plucked from Minnesota during the Kraken's expansion draft and thrived in Seattle. While not known for his offensive game, he did post career bests with the Kraken in his first year there and last season played a big role during the Kraken's rebound run to the playoffs.
The Canucks were targeting defence this signing season, and in Soucy they land a big, physical presence that can fit into the top four. Vancouver also signed Ian Cole (one year, $3 million, according to Friedman), bringing a little more grit to a unit that needs it. These moves on defence come in the wake of the franchise letting go of Oliver Ekman-Larsson (buyout) and Ethan Bear (not qualified).
