Vancouver Canucks defenceman Carson Soucy will have a hearing after cross-checking Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid in the head.
The incident occurred after the buzzer of the Canucks' 4-3 win in Game 3 of their second-round series Sunday in Edmonton.
As the game was winding down near the Canucks net, Soucy shoved McDavid, who responded by slashing him in the legs. Soucy slashed McDavid right back and went to cross-check him when Vancouver's Nikita Zadorov hit the Oilers captain from behind. As McDavid fell, Soucy appeared to hit him in the throat.
Soucy received a two-minute penalty for cross-checking.
"It was an unfortunate incident. There was no intention to hit him that high," Soucy told reporters Monday.
Also Monday, Zadorov was fined $5,000.
The Canucks hold a 2-1 lead in the second-round series. Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday in Edmonton.
