Canucks claim Vesey, Senators nab Forsberg off waivers

New teams, same division.

Two North Division players are joining new Canadian clubs Wednesday as the Vancouver Canucks have claimed forward Jimmy Vesey off waivers, while the Ottawa Senators have snagged goalie Anton Forsberg from the Winnipeg Jets, per Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston.

Vesey, 27, signed a one-year deal with the Maple Leafs worth $900,000 in October — a deal deemed at the time to be a low-risk pact with high-reward potential as a depth scoring option. The forward has struggled to hit his stride, however, tallying five goals and seven points through 30 games this season. Toronto now clears that cap hit as general manager Kyle Dubas looks for depth on the trade market, while Vancouver looks for a spark up front.

This is now the fourth different team and third North Division stop for Forsberg this season. The 28-year-old goaltender initially signed with the Edmonton Oilers back in October for $700,000 as a third-string option, but did not suit up for the club. Claimed off Edmonton’s waivers by Carolina in January, Forsberg was placed back on the wire and scooped up by Winnipeg shortly after. He now lands in Ottawa as an insurance policy in the wake of an apparent injury to Matt Murray. Forsberg has yet to appear in a game this year.
