  • Canucks GM Patrik Allvin on Pettersson, Miller rumours: 'It's very unfortunate'

Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin isn't a big fan of certain kinds of drama when it comes to his hockey team.

All the buzz about J.T. Miller, Elias Pettersson and possible trades is not music to the ears of Allvin.

"It's very unfortunate. I feel bad for a lot of players when you're reading rumours out there," Allvin said in his mid-season press conference with Vancouver reporters on Monday. "I'm proud of the guys they're capable of blocking a lot of noise out and just go out and play. We want to create an environment where they feel safe and trusted. The players have galvanized and played extremely well under the circumstances."

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported Saturday the Canucks are looking to trade Miller. There was talk the Canucks would hold him out of the lineup Saturday, but he ended up playing and delivered a strong effort in a 3-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

Multiple reports have said Miller and Pettersson's relationship is strained.

Allvin on Pettersson: 'It's a process for him to become a star player'
Canucks GM Patrik Allvin is proud of his players for the way they've blocked out all the trade rumours and outside noise, and weighs in on Elias Pettersson's season and career so far, says he takes ownership and will continue to work on his game.

Despite the soap opera-like feel around the team, Allvin believes the Canucks can make the playoffs.

"We all see when they're playing at their best what they're capable of. They're still very good players," the GM said. "Age-wise, it's an intriguing group. ... The core here, they're committed to play here, they're committed to work to getting to the level they're capable of. I do still believe we have a good core here."

Allvin declined comment on trade rumours, but did praise Miller.

"I was really pleased with J.T.'s performance here Saturday night. I thought he was excellent against (Connor) McDavid and (Leon) Draisaitl," Allvin said.

Canucks GM Allvin still believes this current core is a playoff team
Canucks GM Patrik Allvin discusses what he's seen from his core group this season, in midst of a bit of a down year, and explains why he still believes when fully healthy that this team is a playoff team as currently constructed.

Allvin also addressed the future of Rick Tocchet, saying he hopes to get a long-term deal done with the coach. The club has a team option for his current contract next season.

"I do believe he's a good coach and I see him long-term, too," Allvin said. "Obviously, it's a two-way street there. Up to this point, there hasn't been an urgency for us to do anything with the club option. But I'm sure we're going to sit down and talk about it."
