The Vancouver Canucks have informed general manager Jim Benning that he will return after the team missed the playoffs this season.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Benning was informed of the organization’s decision within the last 24 hours. The Canucks close their season Wednesday on the road against the Calgary Flames.
Benning signed a contract extension in the summer of 2019 which expires after the 2022-23 season. He was initially hired as general manager after the 2013-14 season, and since then he has overseen a rebuild which has seen his team miss the playoffs in five of his seven seasons.
The most pressing issue facing Benning in what should be a busy off-season is the status of head coach Travis Green, whose contract will expire after the season. Beyond the coach, Benning will need to negotiate new contracts with stars Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes, who will both be restricted free agents.
