Canucks place defenceman Erik Brannstrom on waivers

The Vancouver Canucks are sending one of their young defencemen to the minors.

General manager Patrik Allvin announced Sunday that the club placed Erik Brannstrom on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the AHL.

Brannstrom was acquired by the Canucks prior to the start of the regular season from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defenceman Tucker Poolman and a 2025 fourth-round draft pick.

In 28 games with the Canucks this season, Brannstrom has three goals and eight points, which ranks fourth among Vancouver defencemen. In two games in the AHL this year, the 25-year-old has three assists.

The Eksjo, Sweden native was selected 15th overall by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 Draft but was traded to the Ottawa Senators as part of the package that sent Mark Stone to Vegas. He spent the majority of his NHL playing career with the Senators, amassing 266 games and 69 points in parts of six seasons in the nation's capital.

If Brannstrom goes unclaimed, he will report to AHL Abbotsford.
