Vancouver Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers was given a match penalty and game misconduct for a hit to the head on Calgary Flames forward Trevor Lewis.
The incident occurred midway through the first period. As both players pursued the puck behind the Canucks’ net, Lewis appeared to hit Myers in the face with his glove. In response, Myers drove his body hard into Lewis — making contact with his head.
The severity of the penalty was determined after a video review and — because a match penalty was assessed — the NHL’s Department of Player Safety will review the play to determine whether it warrants a hearing.
Lewis was forced to leave the game after the hit but did re-join his teammates on the bench to start the second period.
Myers has 11 assists in 43 Canucks games this season.
