Alex Ovechkin added another impressive milestone to his Hall of Fame career Wednesday, becoming just the third player in NHL history to score 50 goals in a season nine different times.
Ovechkin achieved the feat with two goals against the Vegas Golden Knights, tying him with Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky for the most 50-goal seasons in a career.
"Obviously it's pretty good company," Ovechkin said after the game. "Pretty happy. When you score first one you just feel pretty good about the game. I think our line today (felt) good and had pretty good chances."
Ovechkin also made history with his first goal of the game — and 49th of the season — breaking Teemu Selanne's record for most goals in a season over the age of 36. It was his 158th multi-goal game, which is tied with Brett Hull for second all-time behind only Gretzky (189).
Ovechkin is the fourth player to reach 50 goals this season, joining Auston Matthews, Leon Draisaitl and Chris Kreider. Earlier in the season Ovechkin moved into third on the all-time goals list and his two markers give him 780 goals for his career, just 21 behind Gordie Howe (801) and 114 behind Wayne Gretzky's 894.
