The Washington Capitals have signed defenceman Trevor van Riemsdyk to a one-year, $800,000 contract, the team announced Saturday.

The 29-year-old appeared in 49 games with the Carolina Hurricanes last season, scoring one goal and adding seven assists.

Throughout his career, van Riemsdyk has played in 364 regular season games, split between the Chicago Blackhawks and Hurricanes franchises. He's scored a total of 15 goals and 54 assists in those appearances.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Chicago in 2014, van Riemsdyk has also appeared in 26 career playoff games and was a member of Chicago's Cup winning team in 2015.
