The Carolina Hurricanes are adding some insurance to their goaltending depth.
The team announced that Dustin Tokarski signed a one-year two-way contract on Monday.
The deal will pay the 35-year-old $775,000 at the NHL level and $100,000 in the AHL with a guaranteed minimum of $150,000.
According to Elliotte Friedman the Hurricanes have placed Tokarski on waivers for the purpose of re-joining the Wolves. The contract will give Carolina the option to call up the six-foot netminder should the need arise.
“Dustin has played very well for the Wolves this season,” said GM Eric Tulsky. “Given the injury to Frederik Andersen, we felt it was important to add to our depth at the goaltending position and this gives us another option with significant NHL experience.”
On Nov. 21 it was announced that Andersen underwent knee surgery and is expected to miss eight to 12 weeks. His replacement, Pyotr Kochetkov, has been out since he sustained a concussion Saturday Nov. 23 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. However Kochetkov was reportedly back on the ice Monday.
Tokarski has a 4-1-0 record, 1.61 goals-against average, and .933 save percentage in five AHL games with the Chicago Wolves this season. The Watson, Sask., native has played 80 career NHL games posting a 3.15 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage.
