Connor Hellebuyck has opened up on his trade request.
In a letter to Winnipeg Jets fans posted on Instagram on Wednesday, the three-time Vezina Trophy winner said "several considerations" went into his move, including "some very challenging circumstances involving my family."
Hellebuyck did not divulge further details on the issue.
"I know my decision to request a trade was disappointing and frustrating for many people, especially those who supported me throughout my career. I understand those feelings, and I want everyone to know it was an extremely difficult decision," Hellebuyck wrote.
Hellebuyck, the 33-year-old from Commerce Township, Mich., spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Jets before asking for a trade last spring after Winnipeg missed the playoffs.
The star goalie, who won the Hart Trophy as league MVP in 2025, was eventually granted his wish in October in a deal to the New Jersey Devils. The Jets received prospect Alexander Command, forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, goalie Nico Daws and two draft picks in return.
Hellebuyck, who was moved two days before Winnipeg hosted the Heritage Classic, said in his first press conference with the Devils that he wanted to wait before giving more background on his request.
Those details finally came on Wednesday.
"When I think about my years in Winnipeg, I'll always be grateful for the life my family and I built there and for the people who became such an important part of it. It's where I grew as a player and where we started our family," he wrote.
Hellebuyck refused to report to training camp at the beginning of this season, leading to an unpaid suspension and an ugly end to what was mostly a successful tenure with the Jets.
He has appeared in three games for the Devils, earning three wins while sporting a .900 save percentage and 1.95 goals-against average.
Hellebuyck is slated to return to Winnipeg Tuesday, when the Devils visit the Manitoba capital.
