The Arizona Coyotes, fresh off being rejected on a plan for a new entertainment district in Tempe, have taken to Twitter to ask their fans where they want the team to build an arena.
Only locations in Arizona are listed in the Twitter poll — Mesa, Scottsdale, Chandler and Gilbert — under the question: "Pack, we want to hear from you. Where should the Coyotes build our new home?"
About a half-hour into the poll, Scottsdale had a healthy lead with 68 per cent of more than 6,000 votes.
However, many Twitter users responded by picking options not listed in a reply to the original tweet.
Cities in responses included Houston, Mexico City, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Quebec City, Saskatoon and Halifax.
Others took shots at the Coyotes.
"Could you be more embarrassing. Pathetic," tweeted @glendraser16.
"Dear yotes fans, y'all deserved better than this," tweeted @RobertJacobTO.
"Your fans will turn up for a Twitter vote but not when it actually matters," tweeted @LeExiledOne.
The NHL and Coyotes said they would be discussing options for the franchise after Tempe residents rejected a plan for an entertainment district in a vote on Tuesday, leading many to believe relocation is the best option.
Less than 48 hours later, the Coyotes put out a statement saying they were "committed to Arizona."
The Coyotes currently play in Mullett Arena, which seats fewer than 5,000 fans, on the campus of Arizona State University.
The NHL has said the plan is for the Coyotes to remain at Mullett Arena in 2023-24.
