Arizona Coyotes forward Nick Schmaltz has been fined $5,000 for boarding San Jose Sharks defender Radim Simek, the league's department of player safety announced Saturday.

The incident in question occurred midway through the third period of the teams' Friday night tilt, when Schmaltz shoved Simek towards the boards dangerously as the two raced for a loose puck.

Schmaltz was assessed a boarding penalty for the play.

The Coyotes forward has 19 points through 34 games for Arizona so far this season, his third with the club since joining via trade from the Chicago Blackhawks.

Simek has appeared in 26 games for San Jose this season, his third in the big leagues, averaging 14:26 minutes per night on the Sharks blue line.
