Defenceman Damon Severson is joining the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of a sign-and-trade with the New Jersey Devils, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.
As part of the agreement, the Devils will sign Severson to an eight-year, $50-million contract. Severson, a pending unrestricted free agent, was only eligible to sign for eight years with the Devils.
Friedman reports that the Devils will receive the Flames' third-round pick in this month's NHL Draft (80th overall) from the Blue Jackets in return for Severson.
Severson, who turns 29 this summer, was the longest-tenured Devils player, having played in 647 games over the past nine seasons. A six-foot-two, right-shot defenceman, Severson has 58 goals and 263 points in his career.
The move comes only a couple of days after the Blue Jackets added veteran defenceman Ivan Provorov in a three-way trade with the Flyers and Kings.
The Blue Jackets finished 31st in the NHL last season with just 25 wins and 59 points.
