The New Jersey Devils are already fighting injuries and added another important player to that list in Game 1 against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Veteran defenceman Brenden Dillon went down midway through the second period with an apparent lower-body injury and needed to be helped off the ice. He did not return to the ice during the period or rejoin his teammates to start the third.
Dillon, 34, is one of the more experienced blueliners on the Devils. The team is already playing without top-four defenceman Jonas Siegenthaler and star centre Jack Hughes.
Debils' head coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters after the game that Dillon wanted to return, but was held out by team doctors, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
