  • Devils name Martin Brodeur executive vice-president, hockey operations

Martin Brodeur has been named the New Jersey Devils executive vice-president, hockey operations, the team announced Thursday.

The legendary former goaltender has also signed a multi-year extension to remain with the Devils front office, according to the team’s official release.

"Marty has been a tremendous resource to me in my time as General Manager with his experience, input, foresight, and relationships throughout the hockey world," said Devils vice-president and general manager Tom Fitzgerald. "It makes sense to formalize and give clarity to his roles and responsibilities within the organization. I am excited that he has committed to staying with us, as we all work to continue to return New Jersey to the levels of success that Marty reached here as a player."

Brodeur had previously served as the Devils advisor to hockey operations and worked as a liaison to the business side of operations. Now, the team says, Brodeur will be able to focus entirely on hockey operations.

His work will include personnel decisions, roster management, transactions, player recruitment, scouting and overseeing the goaltending development.

"Working with Tom's group for the past few years, I have seen firsthand what he and our managing partners, David Blitzer and Josh Harris, are building," said Brodeur in the statement. "I've been fortunate to help them in that time, as we move in the right direction toward consistent, sustained success. This decision allows me to commit all my time to the hockey side and focus on achieving the ultimate goal for our players, tremendous fans and entire organization."

The Montreal native and Hockey Hall of Famer boasted an exceptional playing career, including three Stanley Cups, four Vezina Trophies and two Olympic gold medals. He also has the most wins ever by a goaltender, with 691, as well as the most wins in a single season, with 48. He also was named to the NHL’s top 100 players of all-time in 2017.

Brodeur, 50, was a member of three Stanley Cup champions for New Jersey before retiring in 2015, after a six-game tenure with the St. Louis Blues. He joined the Blues’ front office before returning to the Devils New Jersey for the 2018-19 season, working in business development.
