New Jersey Devils winger Timo Meier was suspended one game by the NHL's Department of Player Safety on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old was given the suspension for cross-checking Nashville Predators forward Zachary L'Heureux in a game on Monday. Meier was given a hearing on Tuesday for the incident.
Meier will forfeit $45,833.33 U.S. in salary, under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement and on his average annual salary. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
During the chippy contest, Meier was given a major penalty and game misconduct for cross-checking L'Heureux's face. The incident occurred with just under eight minutes remaining in the third period in New Jersey's 5-2 win at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
L'Heureux gave Meier a hit in the back, prompting the Swiss forward to deliver two cross-checks. The second check caught L'Heureux up high, drawing blood from the 21-year-old.
Before the ejection, Meier picked up an assist and five shots on goal in 13 minutes and 37 seconds of ice time.
This season, Meier has recorded scored seven goals and 14 points in 23 games. He had been averaging 17 minutes and 18 seconds of ice time per game for the now 15-7-2 Devils.
