The New Jersey Devils are trading goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 2023 sixth-round draft pick.
Blackwood, once considered to be the Devils' future star goaltender, had his place between the pipes replaced last season by starter Vitek Vanecek and eventual backup Akira Schmid. There has also been speculation about whether the pending restricted free agent would receive a qualifying offer.
Blackwood was selected 42nd-overall in the 2015 NHL Draft and has played his entire career thus far within the Devils organization, making his big-league debut in 2018.
The 26-year-old appeared in 22 games last season for the Devils, posting a .893 save percentage and a 3.20 goals-against average.
