  • Flames' Jakob Pelletier has surgery, projected to be out 'long term'

Jakob Pelletier had successful shoulder surgery and will be out "long term," the Calgary Flames announced Wednesday.

The club added that centre Kevin Rooney is also expected to be out long-term after he has his shoulder surgery. Rooney, 30, spent most of last season with the Wranglers of the AHL, scoring five goals and adding 12 assists for 17 points in 51 games. In 17 games with the Flames, he registered a lone assist.

Pelletier was injured late in the first period of a pre-season game against the Seattle Kraken, as the Flames were making a final push in the offensive zone. Pelletier received the puck on a zone-entry and was pushed from behind into the boards by Marian Studenic shortly thereafter. Pelletier appeared to be favouring his chest and shoulder area after the hit as he left the ice with a trainer.

Studenic was assessed a five-minute major penalty for boarding and was ejected from the game.

Pelletier, 22, dressed for 23 games last season with the Flames, netting three goals and dishing out seven assists. He was selected by Calgary at 26th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft.
