Flames, Flyers nearing trade involving four forwards

The Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers pulled players from their lineups as the two sides discussed a trade.

The Flames scratched forward Andrei Kuzmenko before the start of a game against the Anaheim Ducks and then pulled forward Jakob Pelletier from the game after the first period.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports that both players are part of a trade with the Flyers in exchange for forwards Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee.

The Flyers were also in action Thursday night, hosting the New York Islanders.

Frost was removed from that game in the second period but Flyers head coach John Tortorella told reporters after the game that Frost just "didn't feel good." Friedman confirmed that Frost was banged up during the game.

Calgary acquired Kuzmenko midway through last season as part of the deal that sent Elias Lindholm to the Vancouver Canucks.

Kuzmenko, 28, enjoyed a hot start to his Flames career, as he finished with 14 goals and 11 assists in 29 games with Calgary in 2023-24.

But the Russian forward has struggled this season, with just four goals and 11 assists through 37 games. Friedman reported that Kuzmenko waived his no-trade clause to go to the Flyers.

Pelletier, 23, was a first-round pick (26th overall) by the Flames in 2019. He failed to make the team out of camp this season but after a point-per-game effort in the AHL, he rejoined the Flames in December and has 11 points in 23 games this season.

Frost, 25, was a first-round pick by the Flyers in 2017 and has appeared in 277 NHL games over parts of six seasons. This season he has 25 points in 49 games.

Farabee, 24, was selected 14th overall by the Flyers in the 2018 NHL Draft. He has eight goals and 11 assists in 50 games with Philadelphia this season.

The Flames are currently right in the thick of the playoff race and entered Thursday's game one point back of the Canucks for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

The Flyers lost 3-0 to the Islanders on Thursday and are now third-last in the conference with a 23-24-6 record.
