  • Flames' Tanev forced to leave game vs. Golden Knights after taking puck to face

Calgary Flames defenceman Chris Tanev was forced to leave Monday's game against the Vegas Golden Knights after blocking a William Karlsson shot with his face.

The play happened in the third period after Karlsson secured a loose puck in the Flames zone and fired a wrist shot that Tanev dove in front of and ended up taking on the chin. The 33-year-old was bleeding, but stayed down on the ice only momentarily before rushing to the locker room with a team trainer.

It was the second time Tanev was forced down the tunnel in the game after leaving in the first period after a collision in front of the net.

Following the game, Sportsnet's Eric Francis reported that Tanev "looked fine" in the dressing room.

The 14-year NHL veteran has five points in 21 games for Calgary this season, and, as usual, has provided a solid presence on the team's blue line.

At the time of Tanev's injury, the score was tied 1-1, but the Flames would go on to win in overtime on MacKenzie Weegar's winning tally with 4.8 seconds remaining.
