Philadelphia Flyers captain Sean Couturier was a healthy scratch against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
"Control what I can control, it is what it is," Couturier told Charlie O'Connor of PHLY Sports.
After the team's 4-3 win over the Leafs, coach John Tortorella declined to answer any questions about Couturier, saying the decision was between him and the player.
Tortorella has been critical of his captain of late, going so far as to bench him in the team's 6-5 loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday. Couturier finished the game with only 11:10 of ice time, way down from his usual 18:36.
"A number of players, Sean Couturier being one, need to play better," Tortorella said after practice on Monday.
The captain said he had "somewhat" spoken to Tortorella about his play of late, but added, "It doesn't matter, honestly, what I think. Gotta leave my ego aside.
"I feel I've been putting the work in for a while — I know I've been struggling and trying to work on my game. Definitely frustrated [with] the way I've been treated, I guess, lately, but it is what it is."
Couturier has 11 goals and 36 points this season, but has picked up only one point in his last nine games. His last goal came on Feb. 10 against the Seattle Kraken.
The 31-year-old missed most of the 2021-22 season and the entirety of the 2022-23 season while dealing with a back injury.
He was named the Flyers' captain on Feb. 14.
