The Philadelphia Flyers placed forward Cam Atkinson on waivers in order to complete a buyout of his contract.
General manager Daniel Briere made the announcement Friday, saying it was not an easy decision for the club.
According to CapFriendly, an Atkinson buyout will cost the Flyers $2.383 million toward the cap in 2024-25, followed by a $1.758 million cap charge in 2025-26.
The 35-year-old had one more year remaining on his deal with a $5.875-million cap hit.
"When it comes to someone with the accomplishments and character of Cam, this was an exceptionally tough decision to make," Briere said in a statement sent out by the team.
"Throughout his time with the Flyers, Cam has displayed an incredible work ethic and level of professionalism that is a true credit to him as a player and person. I've witnessed firsthand the amount of effort, dedication, and perseverance he went through during an incredibly tough rehabilitation process in order to come back and be a leader for our team on and off the ice.
"I would like to thank Cam for all he has put into raising the standard of our team. Cam will always have a place in the Flyers organization, and we wish all the success for him and his family in the future."
Atkinson has played the last three seasons in Philadelphia, scoring 36 goals and 78 points in 143 games. He missed the entire 2022-23 season with an injury.
Atkinson was acquired by the Flyers in 2021 in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets for forward Jakub Voracek.
