The New York Rangers signed former Winnipeg Jets captain Blake Wheeler to a one-year deal on Saturday.
The 36-year-old was bought out on Friday ahead of the final year of a five-year, $8.25 AAV contract.
Wheeler served as captain for the Jets between 2016-2022 before relinquishing the role. He was also the lone remaining Atlanta Thrasher still with the club.
The six-foot-five power forward now moves into a more complementary role alongside the Rangers, where he is expected to provide some depth scoring punch.
Last season, Wheeler totaled 16 goals and 55 points in 72 games. For his career, the 15-year veteran has collected 312 goals and 922 points over 1118 regular season games.
