Swiss team HC Ambri-Piotta said Wednesday that forward Alex Formenton is on leave from the team.

“The Leventina club informs that it has granted an indefinite leave to Alex Formenton for personal reasons and has permitted him to return to Canada,” the club said in a statement translated from Italian by Sportsnet.

Formenton is in his second season with Ambri-Piotta after he and the Ottawa Senators failed to come to terms on a new contract when Formenton was a restricted free agent following the 2021-22 season.

Formenton, 24, was a second-round pick in 2017 by the Senators and has appeared in 109 NHL games with Ottawa.
