Vegas Golden Knights owner Bill Foley says a reported Jan. 15 start date to the 2020-21 NHL season could “slide a week or two,” but is confident the campaign will be played.
In a Monday appearance on a broadcast of Fox Business, Foley discussed the upcoming season and the potential of having fans at the team’s home rink in Las Vegas amid a second wave of COVID-19 in the U.S. and around the world.
“It may not start Jan. 15, it may slide a week or two, but we will be playing hockey and we’ll be at T-Mobile,” Foley said.
“But, unfortunately, we may not have fans, which is really sad, especially for our team because we intend on winning the Stanley Cup this year.”
Last weekend, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported the NHL and NHLPA were engaged in discussions about a Jan. 15 start date to the 2020-21 season.
In this scenario, training camps would open approximately two weeks before and the number of games played during the season “would be in the 50s.”
The NHL had previously been targeting a Jan. 1 start.
