Vegas Golden Knights defenceman Alex Pietrangelo was given a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for an aggressive slash on Edmonton Oilers star Leon Draisaitl late in Wednesday's Game 4.
The NHL department of player safety announced that Pietrangelo will have a hearing Thursday for the slash.
After Draisaitl missed a chance at scoring in an empty Vegas net, Pietrangelo skated across the ice, raised his stick over his shoulder and brought it down hard on Draisaitl's arm. Draisaitl was slow to get up and Connor McDavid went after the big defenceman.
Officials reviewed the play and ejected Pietrangelo from the game.
Draisaitl was asked about the slash Thursday, to which he replied "it was ugly." He went on to describe how there is no place for plays like that in the sport and that he is confident the league will handle the incident appropriately.
"That's a really, really dangerous slash," Draisaitl said. "I think those are things that have nothing to do with hockey or the game. You can seriously injure someone with a slash like that and I'm sure the league will take a look at it."
"You'd like to see it reviewed for sure, I would like to see it suspended," McDavid said Wednesday. "It's as intent to injure as you can get. ... That's not a hockey play."
With the score out of reach, Game 4 descended into a penalty-filled affair, with the teams combining for 111 penalty minutes when the dust settled. The Oilers won the game 4-1 to tie the series at 2-2. Game 5 is set for Friday night on Sportsnet and SN NOW.
