Golden Knights sign Noah Hanifin to eight-year, $58.8M contract extension

The Vegas Golden Knights have inked defenceman Noah Hanifin to an eight-year contract extension, the team announced Thursday.

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the deal is worth $7.35 million AAV for a total of $58.8 million.

Hanifin was in the final year of a six-year, $29.7 million contract ($4.95 million AAV).

The 27-year-old was dealt to Vegas on March 6, ahead of the March 8 deadline, as part of a three-team trade that sent a conditional 2025 first-rounder, 2025 conditional third-rounder and defenceman Daniil Miromanov to the Calgary Flames. Vegas also sent a 2024 fifth-rounder to the Philadelphia Flyers for retaining 25 per cent of his cap hit this season.

Since being dealt to the Golden Knights, the defenceman has two goals and seven assists in 16 games while averaging 23:02 minutes of ice. Overall on the season, he has 13 goals and 31 assists for 44 points in 77 games.

The Boston native has spent nine seasons in the NHL, beginning his career with the Carolina Hurricanes. He was dealt to Calgary in his fourth season along with Elias Lindholm in a blockbuster deal that sent Dougie Hamilton, Adam Fox and Michael Ferland to the Hurricanes.

He has 62 goals and 221 assists in 675 games in his NHL career.

The Vegas Golden Knights are currently 42-28-8, good for fourth in the Pacific Division. They're currently holding onto the second wild card spot in the Western Conference and have a three-point lead over the St. Louis Blues with four games remaining.
