Jonathan Quick’s last name best described his time with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Just a day after the rebuilding Blue Jackets acquired the goaltender in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday, Columbus traded Quick to the Vegas Golden Knights.
In return, Columbus receives goalie Michael Hutchinson and a seventh-round draft pick in 2025.
The Blue Jackets will retain 50 per cent of Quick's contract, which is its final year and carries a $5.8-million cap hit.
After acquiring Quick in a deal for goaltender Joonas Korpisalo and defenceman Vladislav Gavrikov, Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen said the club had the utmost respect for his career and “would try to do the right thing.”
Quick won two Stanley Cups with the Kings in 2012 and 2014. His 16-year career with the Kings included two Jennings trophies and the Conn Smythe trophy in 2012, as well as two seasons where he was a finalist for the Vezina. He is the Kings' all-time leader in most goaltending categories, including games played (743), wins (370) and shutouts (57).
However, the 37-year-old Quick has seen his numbers drop in recent years and the Kings — who are competing for first place in the Western Conference — chose to upgrade in net, giving goalie Pheonix Copley a younger tandem partner in Korpisalo.
Quick reportedly was not happy with the deal sending him to Columbus.
