The Carolina Hurricanes have released former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Zach Aston-Reese from his professional tryout.
Along with Aston-Reese, Carolina released Kieffer Bellows, Cory Conacher, Brendan Perlini, Nick Shore and Nathan Beaulieu from their PTOs.
Aston-Reese, who scored 10 goals and 14 points as a member of the Maple Leafs last season, was signed to the PTO ahead of training camp. He is now a free agent.
The 29-year-old joined the Pittsburgh Penguins as an undrafted free agent in 2017 and has since played for the Anaheim Ducks and Maple Leafs.
The Hurricanes also placed Caleb Jones, brother of Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Seth Jones, on waivers for the purpose of reassignment.
The Hurricanes signed another former Maple Leaf, Michael Bunting, to a three-year, $14.7 million deal when free agency opened. Later, the forward told Sportnet's JD Bunkis on his podcast that the Maple Leafs had not produced an offer to Bunting ahead of free agency.
