Hurricanes sign controversial defenceman Tony DeAngelo

Tony DeAngelo, the controversial defenceman who was recently bought out by the New York Rangers, has signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.

The 25-year-old was placed on waivers and ultimately suspended by the Rangers earlier this season after a number of on- and off-ice incidents, culminating in an altercation with then-teammate Alexandar Georgiev outside the locker room following an overtime loss earlier this year.

Soon after, on Feb. 1, then-Rangers GM Scott Gorton announced that DeAngelo had played his last game with the team and would be bought out after the season.

“I had spoke to him at that time and said: ‘Listen, if there’s any more issues here, the time is going to come where we’re going to put you on waivers and move on. No more issues. If your name is in anything at all that we have to hear, we’re going to move on,”’ Gorton said at the time. “I made that statement to him, something happened and I pretty much have to stay true to my word here and the organization’s word that it was time to move on.”

In a statement released Wednesday, Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell briefly acknowledged the situation, saying the Hurricanes had done “a lot of background work” on DeAngelo but were confident he could be “a positive addition” to the team.

Specifics on what the Hurricanes background check encompassed, or uncovered, were not made available by the team at this time.
