Hurricanes forward Teuvo Teravainen suffered a broken hand in Game 2 against the New York Islanders and is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow, head coach Rod Brind'Amour told reporters.
Brind'Amour said the injury occurred in the third period when an Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau slashed Teravainen on the hand. The Hurricanes coach was upset no penalty was called on the play and said even though the power plays were 6-0 for Carolina in the game, the officials missed one on the play that injured Teravainen.
"The guy absolutely tomahawk chops him," Brind'Amour said. "I'm a little pissed, to be honest with you."
This is yet another blow to the Hurricanes' forward group, already missing All-Star Andrei Svechnikov who had season-ending knee surgery in March. Off-season acquisition Max Pacioretty also remains out of the lineup with an Achilles injury suffered in January.
Teravainen, 28, played 68 games in the regular season for the Hurricanes, scoring 12 goals and notching 37 points. This is his seventh regular season and fifth post-season with the team.
The Hurricanes won Game 2 4-3 in overtime and head to Long Island with a 2-0 series lead against the Islanders. Game 3 is set for Friday.
