A trade between the Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers involving James van Riemsdyk has fallen apart, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.
Friedman had initially reported van Riemsdyk, one of the top remaining forwards on the trade block, was going to Detroit.
Ultimately, the Flyers chose to keep van Riemsdyk instead of trading him.
Asked how close he was to trading van Riemsdyk, Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher said "I didn't have any offers at all until about 1:40," adding that the deal was conditional on a different trade that didn't go through, according to Giana Han of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Fletcher said he'd been talking to teams for weeks and thought there would be more of a market for van Riemsdyk.
"We certainly made everyone aware that he was available. We made them aware we'd retain 50 per cent. We even said we'd take back a contract," he said.
"I'm trying to be very clear here. I didn't get a clear offer of even a fourth-round pick."
The 33-year-old van Riemsdyk has seen his offensive numbers drop this season, with just nine goals and 23 points in 41 games. He missed the entire month of November while recovering from a broken finger.
The 14-year veteran has 297 goals and 585 points in 920 games with the Flyers and Maple Leafs.
