Jason Spezza resigns as Maple Leafs special assistant to GM

Jason Spezza resigned from the Toronto Maple Leafs as special assistant to the general manager on Friday, Sportsnet can confirm.

Spezza tendered his resignation prior to club president and alternate governor Brendan Shanahan announcing the Maple Leafs would be parting ways with GM Kyle Dubas.

Spezza joined the team's front office after he retired in May 2022 following 19 seasons in the NHL. He finished his playing career with 995 points — 363 goals and 632 assists — in 1,248 games with the Ottawa Senators, Dallas Stars and his hometown Maple Leafs.

Dubas addressed the media on Monday, three days after the Maple Leafs were eliminated in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Florida Panthers. With his contract set to expire, Dubas was uncertain if he would continue on as general manager.

Shanahan spoke to the media Friday to announce Dubas's departure.

"I would like to thank Kyle for his unwavering dedication over these last nine seasons with the organization, including his last five as general manager," Shanahan said in a statement Friday. "Kyle fostered a great culture within our dressing room and staff, and consistently pushed to make our team better season over season."

Spezza's resignation was not mentioned during Shanahan's press conference.
