The Winnipeg Jets have acquired a proven scorer for the playoff run.
The New Jersey Devils traded winger Tyler Toffoli to the Jets, Sportsnet can confirm.
Toffoli can become an unrestricted free agent this summer. He has a cap hit of $4.25 million this season. The Devils are retaining 50 per cent.
The move is the second big trade by the Jets this season after the club acquired Sean Monahan in early February.
The Jets are in a very competitive race with the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche for first place in the Central Division, two teams who have been aggressively adding in the days ahead of the deadline. The Stars (85 points), Jets (83) and Avalanche (83) trail only the Canucks in the overall West standings.
Toffoli, 31, was leading the Devils with 26 goals in 61 games this season. He was acquired from the Flames before the season as New Jersey looked to build off their second-round appearance last season, but injuries and poor goaltending have led to a disappointing season. The team fired head coach Lindy Ruff earlier this week and is on pace to miss the playoffs.
After this trade, Toffoli will now have played for four of the seven Canadian teams after previously playing for the Canucks, Canadiens and Flames.
