The Winnipeg Jets' injury crisis has gone from bad to worse.
On Friday, Jets head coach Scott Arniel shared an update on defenceman Logan Stanley, who is undergoing knee surgery and will be out for a minimum of four weeks.
"[Stanley's] having surgery today. It's on his knee so it'll be minimum four weeks. That's tough news on him, so he goes on the shelf with Ville [Heinola]," Arniel said.
Despite only playing in 25 games during the 2023-24 NHL season, which Arniel said "had more to do with numbers," the 26-year-old was "excited about getting in" this year.
"He was going to be one of the fixtures in our group. He also has that size and physicality that we need, so it's a big hit for us and I just hope he gets recovered and gets himself back as soon as possible," Arniel said.
The blue-liner was injured in warmups before a 6-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.
Stanley had one goal and one assist while averaging 13:46 of ice time per game for the Jets last season. He signed a two-year, $2.5 million extension in the off-season.
On Thursday, Arniel revealed that fellow defenceman Heinola underwent surgery to remove a pin in his ankle, which he had surgically repaired last season. The timeline for the 23-year-old's return is uncertain, but the minimum is four weeks.
"Ville had his surgery, so the timeline for that, we'll wait and see ... hopefully, it's a quick recovery," Arniel told reporters.
The Jets open the regular season in Edmonton against the Oilers on Oct. 9.
