The Winnipeg Jets will be without Josh Morrissey for the remainder of their first-round series against the Vegas Golden Knights after the star defenceman suffered a lower-body injury early in Game 3 on Saturday.
Jets head coach Rick Bowness made the announcement following the Jets' loss, a 5-4 bout that went to double overtime before a whiteout crowd at Canada Life Centre.
Morrissey's injury appears to have occurred less than two minutes into Saturday's matchup, the result of a knee-on-knee collision as he braced for a hit on Vegas defenceman Zach Whitecloud in the Jets' zone. Morrissey finished his shift but didn't look comfortable, and played just one more shift after the incident before heading to the Jets' locker room.
The team announced after the first period he'd miss the remainder of the game — a game that saw Winnipeg rally back from a three-goal deficit to force overtime without their top rearguard. The Golden Knights went on to prevail in double overtime to take a 2-1 series lead and steal back the momentum.
Morrissey is coming off a sensational season, his offensive game hitting new levels under Bowness. The 28-year-old tallied career-bests by a mile in goals (16), assists (60) and points (76) -- the latter total second among all NHL defenemen.
