Winnipeg Jets forward Gabriel Vilardi will not return to Tuesday's game against the Los Angeles Kings after sustaining a lower-body injury, the team announced.
The incident occurred in the first period, when Vilardi was hit along the boards by Kings forward Blake Lizotte. Vilardi went down at an awkward angle as it appeared his right leg folded beneath him, but was able to skate off the ice on his own accord.
After the game, Jets head coach Rick Bowness told reporters that Vilardi will be "reevaluated in the morning" and that it is too early to know if the injury is long-term or not.
Vilardi, 24, was skating in his first game against his former team since being traded to the Jets as part of the deal that sent Pierre-Luc Dubois to Los Angeles.
The Kingston, Ont., native had a breakout campaign last season, notching 23 goals and 41 points in 63 games.
He was selected 11th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Kings.
