John Gibson’s agent says the veteran goaltender has not told the Anaheim Ducks that he will refuse to play another game for the hockey club, denying a report made over the weekend by Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff.
"John Gibson has asked for a trade," Seravalli said on the Nasty Knuckles podcast this weekend. "And he’s said 'I am not playing another game for the Anaheim Ducks.'"
Kurt Overhardt from KO Sports Inc., in a statement provided to Sportsnet on behalf of Gibson, said the report made by Seravalli is “false, unjust and inflammatory.”
“My client has never stated to any member of the Anaheim Ducks front office any such statement,” Overhardt said in his statement. “John Gibson is honored to be a member of the Anaheim Ducks and is a committed supporter of its fanbase, as well as the Ducks’ community.”
Gibson has spent his entire 10-year career with the Ducks, winning the Jennings Trophy in 2015-16 and leading the team to the playoffs in each of his first four seasons. The soon-to-be 30-year-old is entering the fifth year of an eight-year contract that carries a $6.4 million cap hit and has a modified no-trade clause.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman provided some more context about Gibson’s status in Monday’s episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast. In the podcast, Friedman said Gibson "wants a trade and the Anaheim Ducks want to accommodate" but "I think the Ducks have found this process harder than they thought."
However, Friedman added that Gibson communicated to the Ducks on Monday that he did not say he would refuse to play for the team again if a trade didn’t come together.
