San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane didn’t offer up much in a media availability on Tuesday when it came to answering questions about his suspension for allegedly using a fake vaccination card.
At the start of the season, Kane was suspended for submitting a fake COVID-19 vaccination card upon returning to the Sharks for training camp. He was subsequently suspended 21 games by the NHL.
When asked about his suspension, Kane replied, “You’ll have to refer to the NHL statement they put out about … the suspension. I served my time, did my 21 games, and now I’m back.”
Asked in a follow-up question whether he used a fake vaccination card, Kane replied, “You know what, I’m fully vaccinated and that’s really all I have to say about it.”
Kane cleared waivers on Monday and was expected to report and play for the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL.
On Sunday, Kane’s agent issued a statement, saying, “Over the past few weeks, we have been discussing Evander’s return to San Jose. We were not surprised by the Sharks’ decision to put him on waivers and, if he does clear, he will report to the Barracudas. Evander is looking forward to resuming his NHL career this season.”
Kane has been the subject of a number of other off-ice issues in recent months, including allegations of domestic assault by his estranged wife Anna Kane and counter-claims by Kane in court, allegations he bet on NHL games (which the league cleared him of) and filing for bankruptcy.
Kane, 30, is three seasons into a $49-million, seven-year contract. He’s with his third organization after being drafted by and debuting with Atlanta/Winnipeg, and a stint in Buffalo.
Last season, he had 22 goals and 27 assists in 56 games. He last played an NHL game in May.
