Tanner Jeannot may be hearing from NHL player safety soon.
The Los Angeles Kings forward was handed a match penalty for an open-ice hit against Vancouver Canucks winger Brock Boeser. The match penalty means there will be an automatic NHL review.
Boeser went to the locker room following the play and was then ruled out for the remainder of the game by the team.
Picking up speed while crossing centre ice, Jeannot appeared to make contact with a seemingly unsuspecting Boeser around the chin area.
“I haven't looked at it, but for the refs to call five minutes, obviously a dangerous hit,” said defenceman Quinn Hughes, who had a goal and an assist in the Canucks' 4-2 win.
Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet did not have any update on Boeser's status.
“It was a dangerous play. I don't know how Brock is, I haven't seen him,” Tocchet said. "We'll see when I see him, but, yeah, it's a tough play.”
Boeser leads the Canucks with six goals and is second on the team with 11 points. He set career highs last season with 40 goals and 73 points.
Conor Garland scored on the five-minute power play assessed to Jeannot, tying it at 1 at 14:20 of the first period.
