Seattle Kraken forward Joonas Donskoi has retired from professional hockey after suffering multiple concussions throughout his career, he announced in a social media post on Sunday.
Donskoi was sidelined for the entire 2022-23 season for the Kraken after colliding with teammate Kole Lind in a pre-season game, suffering a concussion in the process. In his first season with the Kraken, the 31-year-old struggled to find the offence he was able to generate with past teams, posting only two goals and 22 points in 75 games.
Donskoi played for the San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche before being selected by the Kraken in the expansion draft. He appeared in the Stanley Cup Finals with the Sharks in 2016 and won a President's Trophy with the Avalanche in 2021.
The native of Raahe, Finland, was selected 99th overall in the 2010 NHL Draft by the Florida Panthers, but signed his entry-level contract with the Sharks after Florida relinquished his NHL rights.
