Kraken place goaltender Philipp Grubauer on waivers

More big money is filtering through the NHL waiver wire.

Grubauer, who has one year left on his contract at $5.9 million, would be assigned to the American Hockey League’s Coachella Valley Firebirds if he clears.

The 33-year-old signed a six-year, $35.4 million contract to join the Kraken for their inaugural season in 2021-22, which ranks as 14th- and 11th-highest cap hit for goalies signed for 2025-26 and 2026-27, respectively. That makes it highly unlikely he is claimed, even with the cap expected to increase dramatically.

But the German, who won the Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals in 2018, has failed to live up to the deal. Grubauer carries an .866 save percentage this season and has yet to eclipse .900 in four years with Seattle.

Meanwhile, Joey Daccord has emerged to take over the Kraken crease, posting a .917 save percentage across 33 appearances on the year.
