Seattle Kraken forward Matty Beniers will miss the team's next two games after he received a cross-check from Vancouver Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers on Wednesday, head coach Dave Hakstol told reporters Friday.
The play occurred in the second period of Seattle's 6-1 win, when Myers cross-checked an unsuspecting Beniers, who was not near the puck. Beniers fell to the ice and was slow to get up, and did not return for the third period.
Speaking to Seattle sports radio, Hakstol had some choice words about the play.
"I thought the hit on Matty was garbage, I didn't like it at all," he said.
The Kraken play Friday against the Calgary Flames and Saturday against the Columbus Blue Jackets before entering their bye week ahead of the NHL All-Star break, meaning Beniers's next game with Seattle would be on Feb. 7 at the earliest.
The 20-year-old American, who has 17 goals and 19 assists through 47 games in his rookie season with the Kraken, was selected to the NHL All-Star Game on Feb. 4. Hakstol did not have an update on whether this injury would affect his status for the event.
In a corresponding move, the Kraken recalled forward Max McCormick from the AHL's Coachella Valley Firebirds.
